FAQs and answers

How are the Codima Spider products licensed?

There are two aspects to the license process.

  1. Licensing to control access, see FAQ :-

  1. Licensing to control the operation of the Codima Spider, see FAQ :-

How are Credentials used to control access?

Credentials control access to the user interface. The Codima Spider is configured with default login options. The credentials are linked to the User Name supplied at Login. Each customer would have a License that would allow one Administrator and a number of normal users access to the Codima Spider. The Administrator can set up/control access rights for users by setting up credentials for User Name he defines.

How is the licensing used to control operation of Codima Spider?

The licensing methods associated with the Codima Spider are the same as those that apply to the Codima Toolbox. The number of Managed devices allowed in a discovery for example is controlled by the License. The Codima Spider license will not allow local access to asset inventory, mapping and monitoring functions. These functions are only accessible when you browse the Codima Spider Host Platform.

How is the Codima Toolbox Licensed

There are two options:-

NOTE: PAYG LICENSES ARE NO LONGER IN USE

For more information, see

IT Inventory and Mapping Toolbox License - If I had a 500 managed device license for example would the drawings and reports only cover 500 addresses?

The license for this toolbox is based on Managed devices, so the license count does NOT include devices that just respond to ICMP or rDNS.  So effectively a 500 managed device license might actually provide topology drawings and asset reports covering thousands of addresses, it is just that the system will stop the discovery when it gets the reply from the 500th Managed device.

VoIP Readiness Toolbox - If I have a license count that covers 100 concurrent phones, how much stress testing can I do?

If you have a license that allows for 100 concurrent phones, you can set up a configuration designed to generate RTP traffic that is equivalent to the media stream associated with 100 continuous phone calls. This traffic can be targeted at :-

  • A single Sink System* - loading equivalent up to 100 continuous phone calls down one path (e.g., traffic level incremented from say 10 phones up to the license maximum of 100 phones)

or

  • Multiple Sink Systems* in parallel, e.g., 5 Sink Systems* - loading equivalent to up to 20 continuous phone calls down 5 paths (e.g., traffic level incremented from say 1 phones up to 20 phones on each path, which would meet the license maximum of 100 phones)

For more information on concurrent phone license counts and the impact of the PAYG License system, see the examples provided in the FAQ - describing concurrent phones.

*Sink Systems are Platforms that are used by the VoIP Simulation tool and VoIP Pre Deployment Assessment tool, they are used to define the "B" end of the paths being monitored/tested.

Note: The license applies only to the configuration capabilities, your Host Platforms must still be able to handle the planned phone loading, as successful operation will be subject to the Host Platforms memory speed, cache size, motherboard organization and Network Interface.  For more information on this review the information provided for Back to Back testing on the FAQs - VoIP Pre Deployment testing page.

What is a Sink License?

This is the license embedded in the software downloaded for use on Sink systems. Sink systems are used by the VoIP Simulation and VoIP Pre Deployment Assessment tool, they are used to define the "B" end of the paths being monitored/tested. This license is not machine locked. So one copy of the Sink software can be used to create more than one Sink system. The user interface when using a system that has this license is blocked so locally you only have access to the System part of the user interface.

What is the impact on my License count if I am undertaking Back to Back testing as a means of validating Host Platforms to check if they can handle the planned loading levels?

The VoIP Pre Deployment Assessment tool is licensed by counting the number of phones associated with the phone loading, however from a cost perspective this count is only applied when you select to create a Word Report covering the test results.  For example if you have a PAYG license, it will only report counts associated with the production of the Word Reports covering the test results. There is no need to create Word reports during Back to Back testing, as you can see the results of the test in the Reports Preview.

However during Back to Back testing you will still be restricted by any upper limit in your license.  Codima can supply temporary licenses with larger limits if needed should you wish to validate the maximum loading levels that your Host Platforms can handle.

NOTE: PAYG LICENSES ARE NO LONGER IN USE

What is the impact on my PAYG license if I run a repeat discovery on the same network - will I get charged twice?

If the discovery is repeated within the same calendar month, you will NOT be charged twice for discovering the same devices. The License facility only reports unique devices discovered, it will for example compare MAC addresses from each discovery run undertaken within the calendar month and only count them once.

NOTE: PAYG LICENSES ARE NO LONGER IN USE

What license counts are needed if I am going to use the Multi Site scheduler?

There is a formulae for this. You decide how many sites you need to cover. You then decide how many managed devices are needed at the largest site. That number is multiplied by the number of sites.

For example 5 sites and largest needs 2000 managed devices. This means you need a license for 10,000 devices, and because it is multi site it will cost the normal price for 10,000 managed devices plus 0.5 times the 10,000 managed devices price.

Codima will then deliver the required Licenses for each of the Toolboxes involved in the Multi Site Scheduler process. The Licenses will be machine locked to a MAC address of a NIC in the Host Platforms.

For more on the Multi Site Scheduler, see FAQs Multi Site Scheduler.

About License Counts

In the license counts what constitutes a Managed Device?

This applies to:-

Managed devices are any device the Codima Discovery Engine gets management information from, i.e., not ones that are just addresses in the ARP/Routing/Forwarding tables or devices that we just know exist because they respond to pings and reverse DNS, but devices that give the system information, such as the type of device it is or in the case of SNMP and WMI provide a lot of internal information on configuration etc.

The Discovery engine uses a number of methods including SNMP, WMI, CDP, EDP, Alcatel InterSwitch Discovery Protocol, LLDP, SIP Queries and NetBIOS to get management information.

Note: Users who also have the Codima Toolbox All in One installed will have access to extra information on VoIP phones. These VoIP Phones would also be included in the license count as they are devices where we have learned more that just the IP address and name.

In the license counts what constitutes an IP Phone?

This applies to the :-

It is the count for the number of  IP Phones logged by these products.

When monitoring a new network, the system starts counting the phones as soon as they monitor a phone registering with its VoIP Registration Server.

In the license counts what constitutes a concurrent Phone?

This applies to stress testing using the VoIP Pre Deployment Assessment tool. It is the total number of phones loaded across all the paths tested. A 10 phone count in the test will transmit the RTP Media traffic that ten phones would produce if making continuous calls using the selected Codec. (Example G711 = 87.2 Kbps (headers included) X 10 (number of phones))

Diagram showing two paths - A to B and B to C. Sink systems are sited at the end of each path

The examples below applies to a PAYG situation where the count is reported each calendar month.

Example 1 - Testing a single path using a single Sink system

Within the calendar month only one path is tested, the test traffic destination is Sink Site 224 (B in above diagram) : loading up to 200 phone = 200 concurrent phones

Word Report created on Blaster Manager Host Platform and count reported.

Total PAYG count for license = 200 concurrent phones, reported when word report is generated for the path under test.

Example 2 - Testing multiple paths in parallel using multiple Sink systems

Within the calendar month 2 paths are tested using 1 Blaster Manager Host Platform and 2 Sink Platforms.

Test traffic destination is Sink Site 224 (B in above diagram)  : loading up to 200 phones = 200 concurrent phones

Test traffic destination is Sink Site 225 (C in above diagram) : loading up to 100 phone = 100 concurrent phones

Word Reports created on Blaster Manager Host Platform and counts reported.

Total PAYG count for license = 300 concurrent phones, reported when word reports are created for each of the paths under test.

Example 3 - Testing multiple paths using a single Sink system

Within the calendar month 2 paths are tested, using 1 Blaster Host Platform and moving 1 Sink Platform to the locations where the paths terminate (location B first then location C)

Test traffic destination is Sink Site 224 (B in above diagram) : loading up to 100 phone = 100 concurrent phones

Then after moving the Sink Platform to location C, the Test traffic destination is Sink Site 225 (C in above diagram) : loading up to 70 phones = 70 concurrent phones

Word Reports created on Blaster Manager Host Platform and counts reported.

Total PAYG count for license = 170 concurrent phones, reported when word reports are created for the paths under test.
