What are the Benefits of using the Automated Correlation Engine?
There are a large number of benefits, here are some of them :-
Automated analysis of statistical and status information.
The Automated Correlation Engine uses information gathered from a number of sources.
The main source of information is the History databases containing statistics gathered by the Codima Toolbox using both Passive and Active analysis:-
Passive Analysis involves monitoring and analyzing the frame flow on the network.
Active analysis involves using ICMP Pings and SNMP to gather information.
You can use this system to look for correlations between key statistics in History charts and other activities occurring on the network at the same time.
Can be used to correlate the results of stress testing the network using the VoIP Pre Deployment Assessment tool against other network activities, such as packet drops on Network Interfaces or CPU loading in process switched routers.#
Can be used to find out who is invoking routing issues.
Can be used to correlate information on Pinger activities on the network.
Used to check to see if Pinger is having issues with lost frames or is experiencing delays on selected pinger path.
Used to look for general ping loading as this can show down operations – identifies when you have Ping DoS attacks
Used to find who is sending out Ping, useful to detect source of Ping storm.
Can be used to correlate information on the priorities settings used by traffic on the network.
Used to check which protocols are using EF, for example with packet drops. Protocol can then be corrected to not use the EF priority if they are not high priority Media Traffic such as VoIP. Stop mis-prioritized traffic from overloading bandwidth provision for a given priority.
Can be used to correlate information on broadcasts patterns to isolate broadcast storms.
Can be used to correlate information on frame size patterns.
Small frames create more switching work for network devices, long frames can introduce delays and Jitter especially on slow links.
Can be used to see if high loading is causing issues for network devices and systems.
Can be used to see the effect of Call Loading, Registered Phones or Internal Queuing on Response times like Time to ring.
Can correlate statistics associated with bottleneck analysis.
Used to check if performance is
impacted by CPU loading e.g., response times may be slowed by high CPU loading
in a Server or packets that are process switched in a Router. Picks up links
between performance and memory issues, for instance low memory will probably
slow down Server performance or process switched packets in a Router.

What are the benefits of using the Protocol Expert System?
You can speed up troubleshooting, as it provides an Expert analysis of capture frames and pre-saved frame files. It can be used to focus on important activities and look for patterns.
Scope and Operations
What type of Expert Systems does the Toolbox have?
There are two types of Expert System included in the Codima Toolboxes
The Protocol Expert System - described below
The Automated Correlation Engine (ACE) - described below
- Protocol Expert System :-
What is the Protocol Expert System?
This is a facility that undertakes it analysis on frames monitored using the Protocol Analysis tool. It will review the contents of the capture buffer or frames files to look for patterns, trends and error conditions based on the frames it monitors, see Help entry titled:-
Protocol Expert System
What does the Protocol Expert System deliver?
The process involves accessing a series of databases that contain information learned from monitoring the frames. The databases will include information on Routers, Clients, Hosts, Telnet sessions, FTP sessions, TFTP sessions and more.
The results of the Analysis are shown in the Expert Log, from this log you can access the Expert Help and view the individual frame the analysis was based on.
For full information and the range of Expert Messages provided, see Help entry titled:-
Protocol Expert System
How do I access the Protocol Expert System?
You access by selecting to view the Capture Buffer or a frame file - then click on the Run Packet Analysis Icon.
- Automated Correlation Engine
What is the Automated Correlation Engine - ACE?
The Automated Correlation Engine (ACE) it is a expert system that operates using information gathered from a number of sources.
The main source of information is the History databases containing statistics gathered by the Codima Toolbox using both Passive and Active analysis.
You can use this system to look for
correlations between key statistics in History charts and other activities
occurring on the network at the same time.
What does the Automated Correlation Engine deliver?
The correlation results will be dependant on the toolbox being used, for detailed information you should review the
This guide includes a list of some of the results that can be delivered by the Automated Correlation Engine
The Automated Correlation Engine for example can be used to:-
You can also learn more about ACE by watching the Tutorial titled "How to use Automated correlation Engine".
